CLAS Announces 2011 Collegiate Teaching Award Recipients
CLAS Dean Linda Maxson has announced the recipients of this year’s CLAS Collegiate Teaching Awards. The recipients were chosen by the College’s Teaching Awards Committee from nominations by students and colleagues.

“These awards are the highest recognition the College gives to faculty for their teaching,” said Dean Maxson. “Their teaching role includes the ways in which they mentor students, innovate in our course offerings, and involve students in research, as well as their hard work and achievements in classroom instruction. I am very pleased to be able to honor the commitment of our Collegiate Teaching Award winners to the College’s academic mission.”

Jane Gilotti, associate professor of Geoscience, teaches courses in structural geology and field methods. She prizes active learning and maintains a research program that establishes connections with organizations around the world to provide fieldwork opportunities for student majors. As the head of her department’s Undergraduate Committee, she revised the Geoscience core curriculum to be more easily completed in four years and to include more learning opportunities for students, which, in addition to her redesign of the field geology training program, has greatly increased the number of undergraduate majors. Students routinely rate her an excellent teacher who sets high standards and “inspire[s] [them] to learn more.” She recently completed a semester-long internship at ExxonMobil Exploration Co. and has worked in government, museums, and industry.

We are pleased to announce that Ann (Nancy) Budd was recently named as F. Wendell Miller Professor by Dean Maxson. This appointment is a five-year renewable term appointment beginning January l, 2011 and running through December 31, 2015. Dr. Budd’s appointment will be formally celebrated at the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences April Honors Celebration.

Christine Harms was selected by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to receive the Mary Louise Kelley Staff Excellence Award. She will be recognized at the College’s Staff Recognition Reception on Tuesday, March 29, 2011.  The reception will take place in the second floor ballroom of the IMU from 2:30-4:00. Congratulations, Chris!

The Department of Geoscience is currently accepting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a specialty in hydrogeology. The position is part of a significant university-wide initiative that seeks to build interdisciplinary expertise in water sustainability.

We seek an outstanding researcher and teacher with interests in groundwater, and who complements strengths in the Department and other campus organizations, such as IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering and the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research. Research involving field and laboratory studies of groundwater hydrology and water pollution will be considered a desirable quality. He/she is expected to develop an active, externally-funded program of research and to develop ties with other faculty in our department and across campus working in the environmental and hydrologic sciences and sustainability. In addition to attracting and mentoring graduate students, the successful applicant will be expected to teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

The appointment will begin August, 2011. A Ph.D. in geoscience or a related field is required by the time of appointment.
